Bricolage Campus-wide Signage

In 2015, the New Orleans Recovery School District announced that Bricolage Academy would operate from the former John McDonogh High School. With a $35 million renovation handled by VergesRome Architects now complete, we scouted and designed campus-wide solutions for Bricolage’s fifth and final residence needing identity graphics, wayfinding, and clear signage.

How We Think > Creative Process

Research methods and design solutions can develop over weeks, months and even years. The goal here is to show a snippet of research, concept plus style, and a significant result.

HOW we SOLVED THE CHALLENGE CONCEPTUALly

The 106-year old Gothic Revival-style red brick school designed by architect E.A. Christy is commonly known for his strong, structurally sound designs and buildings. The school now occupies over 97,000-square-feet along historic Esplanade Avenue and can accommodate around 750 to 900 students.

This historic architectural gem did not yet reflect Bricolage’s brand voice and visuals. We scouted the bright blank hallways and crystal-clean facilities to create detailed experiences that connect and orient all visitors to highly trafficked areas. We installed identity graphics, wayfinding, and clear signage in shared everyday spaces.

How we solved the challenge visually

The natural choice made sense to adopt the John McDonogh Trojan mascot and their primary 2-color palette. The Bricolage logo then added a descriptor line: “Academy at John McDonogh.” In all wayfinding solutions, this outlined setup helped remind visitors of the adopted address, consistent messaging, and a repeated color palette — when lost or disoriented in the new facility. When adopting a pre-existing brand symbol, Bricolage now needed a brand refresh and athletic mascot redesign. This creative phase would honor separate pasts and look to a united future that all members could identify.

What Clients Say

Mary Louise goes beyond your mission statement to bring your space and materials to life. With Bricolage, she stayed close to the growth, evolution, successes, challenges, students, and staff. Her goal was to know the school experiences, so the design work reflected Bricolage's mission, values, and people. Her eye for style, color, and photography made Bricolage at home no matter the campus location.
